Moving Beyond the Basics
Presented by the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, a nonprofit that has taught chess to children since 1990. Level 2 is for students who've mastered the basics and are ready to go deeper: evaluating positions through material, mobility, and king safety, and learning to build and sustain attacks on the opponent's king through the study of classic attacking games.
Along the way, students build executive function skills — inhibition (resisting the first move that comes to mind), working memory (holding variations in your head), planning, and flexibility. In everyday terms: pausing before you act, thinking ahead, adapting when things change, and not getting rattled by a setback.
Some students play purely for fun; others will be ready, by the end of this series, to try their first tournament.
