Creativity meets scientific process in this hands-on, experimental studio art class for kids ages 5 – 8. Over six weeks, young artists will explore a new scientific concept, conduct simple experiments, and transform the results into contemporary artwork using painting, drawing, sculpture, and more! Guided by Artist Innovation award winning artist Kelcie McQuaid, students will progress from observation to experimentation, design, engineering, and finally a collaborative installation, experiencing the wonder of science through expressive, emotionally resonant art.
Week One: Experiment with prisms, shadows, and color theory and create 2D prisms with paint, paper, collage techniques and light exploration.
Week Two: Explore pitch, resonance, and sound wave patters and build a simple instrument to create a sculptural sound installation.
Week Three: Play with the physics of motion, gravity, and kinetic art and design an agamograph (an art form that uses optical illusions to change what you see depending on what angle you view it from) using mixed media materials.
Week Four: Experiment with safe chemical reactions (such as color-changing paint or crystal growth) and craft a textured sculpture.
Week Five: Study plant biology and ecosystems while producing eco-focused printmaking and collage art.
Week Six: This final week of class encourages experimental exploration while building a final collaborative installation that fuses all discoveries made in previous weeks.
