This course, taught by artist Shelly Kaye, will build on skills introduced in beginner acrylic painting courses while exploring the seven principles of design: balance, contrast emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity. Learn how to create focal points, control visual weight, lead the viewer’s eye, and bring an entire painting together with unity and harmony.
Week one: Explore balance and understand how size, color, value, shape, and placement affect visual weight of a painting before you create a still life focusing on the balance of the piece.
Week two: Learn about contrast and emphasis and how they work to establish visual interest before creating a painting with a clearly dominant area of emphasis.
Week three: Understand how movement will direct the viewer’s eyes and create a work that will make the viewer’s eye travel through the composition.
Week four: Explore how pattern, rhythm, and repetition work together as a compositional tool as you create a rhythmic landscape or abstract painting.
Week five: Understand how unity creates a sense of wholeness, harmony, and completeness and create a limited palette painting.
Week six: Bring together all of the principles you’ve learned in the past six weeks while creating an original work of art.

Students will need the following materials:
• Acrylic paint set Primary colors- Warm & cool Red, warm and cool Yellow, warm and cool Blue
• NO Black, Lots of Titanium White.
• Please no student grade paints. There isn't sufficient pigment.
• Matte Medium (for varnish and mixing)
• Acrylic-safe brushes:
o Synthetic preferred
o Round, Flat; at least one large, one small;
• Canvas or canvas panels to practice on.
o (2) of either 11 x 14 inches or 16 x 20 inches
o (4) 8x10 or (4) 12x12 square
• Gesso to cover canvases if cheaper variety.
• Spray bottle
• sketchpad/no lines
• Palette (disposable or reusable), paper plate is fine
• Palette knife, plastic is fine
• Paper towels / rags
• Water container
